John has worked as a freelance private music instructor for years. He offers lessons on saxophone, clarinet, flute, and beginner piano. Private lessons for beginners and intermediate students cover music theory, instrumental technique, and playing literature. More advanced topics include jazz improvisation, advanced theory, history, ear training, and sight reading. Lessons are always catered to the educational needs and musical interests of each student.
Private Teaching.
Group Classes.
Working with groups of students is an effective way to share a learning space together and learn collectively form each other. Be it music history, music theory, composition, or a number of other topics, John's classroom teaching style has always been to ask questions, create discussion, and value individual perspectives over all. This way everybody can offer something productive and we can all gain valuable insight into a topic.
Ensemble Directing.
Directing ensembles is another one of John's specialties. Whether it's a jazz big band, a small woodwind trio, or a symphony orchestra, John has conducted and arranged for many types of ensembles, including contemporary rock, blues, funk, ska, and latin ensembles. He makes sure that individual attention and overall group musicality are at the forefront of each rehearsal and performance.
